ETIQUETTE & ESPIONAGE (Finishing School series Book 1), by Gail Carriger

The story: Sophronia Temminnick is a tomboy, skulker, and troublemaker. Her family, minor aristocrats in a very steampunk 1800s England, want to be in the snooty upper levels of society, but Sophronia does NOT fit the mold–so when Sophronia is recruited to attend Miss Geraldine’s Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality, the family is relieved. Little do they know that when she arrives, she’ll be mingling with vampires and werewolves–not to mention boys of a lower social order! There’s an equal amount of knife fighting and vampire defense as there is practicing dancing and flirting. They’re being finished, all right–but for what? Sophronia figures they’ll either end up as spies or assassins–and right now, she’s going to use her developing skills to find out what the “prototype” is that everyone’s trying to steal from each other. Maybe she’ll even steal it for herself!

Mrs. Friend says: Victorian high society mixes it up with steampunk, vampires, and werewolves!  This book, along with the second book in the series, Curtsies and Conspiracies, has a lot of action and a very funny narrator…as long as you understand up front that it’s not anything like England today!  You have to pay attention, but Sophronia is a smart heroine who’s almost always one step ahead of the boys!
