THE EVOLUTION OF CALPURNIA TATE, by Jacqueline Kelly

Dumb cover! Fun story!

It’s 1899 in Texas, and “Callie Vee” is the only girl among six brothers – so while the boys run wild on their Texas farm, she gets stuck learning to do embroidery and housekeeping.  What she’d really rather do is … cool scientific stuff with Granddaddy.  But no one has ever heard of a girl scientist, thank you very much.  Dance lessons it is.

But Callie is able to sneak in time to go creature hunting with Grandpa, and they are on track to discover a new species … unless Callie’s mother discovers where she’s gone first!  Callie narrates the story and has a funny, ironic way of  looking at things.  And if anyone can find a way to make a career out of something society frowns on, it’s Callie!
