PAGAN’S CRUSADE, by Catherine Jinks

The infantry is coming? Run away!

The infantry is coming? Run away!

Pagan is a smart-aleck 16-year-old at the time of the Crusades.  He’s a street kid looking for three square meals a day, so he takes a job as squire to Lord Roland de Bram – a knight in shining armor who appears just too good to be true.

The story follows Pagan as he learns washing, polishing, and even a little fighting.  Though he’s a dedicated cynic, he comes to admire Lord Roland, and realize that there’s a place in the world for the good guys, too.

Then, unexpected crisis arrives:  Damascus has fallen to Saladin, the Muslim prince, and the army is heading to Jerusalem.  Pagan soon finds himself in the middle of a pitched battle.  The only thing that keeps him from running away is (surprise!) his loyalty and affection for Sir Roland.  This is the first of three books about Pagan.
